Enrollment Picture Encouraging

Posted By rcapehart on March 26, 2010

West Liberty University’s enrollment picture for the Fall 2010 continues to look encouraging based upon figures recently compiled by Dean of Students Scott Cook. As of the March Application Report, the University has received 1,770 applications for the Fall 2010 term. This is a 12% increase over the University’s March report in 2009. Moreover, the number of students accepted to the University has increased 7% over this same point last year. The enrollment for the Summer term 2010 is also encouraging.  Currently, summer enrollment is up 26% over this point last year.

2009 - An Exciting and Historic Year!

Posted By rcapehart on December 31, 2009

We will remember 2009 as an exciting and historic year for West Liberty University. The most memorable event for our students, faculty, staff, alumni, benefactors and community was the preparation, anticipation and celebration of University Week leading up to a terrific fireworks display at midnight. Then, on University Day, May 3, 2009, HEPC Chancellor Brian Noland presented the University with its charter and our faculty signed the University Book.

There were also other notable events during 2009:

  • Significant increases in our enrollment in both the Spring 2009 and Fall 2009 semesters. The incoming freshman class in the Fall was the largest since 1977.
  • The opening of the Highlands Center in August and the closing of the Warwood Center which had served us well for a quarter of a century.
  • The HEPC’s designation of a new College of Science building at West Liberty University as its highest construction priority and the allocation of $13 million in bonding authority.
  • The hiring of a program director for our Physician Assistant program which we believe will join nursing and dental hygiene as signature health care programs.
  • A remarkable 10% increase in giving to our Foundation despite a significant downturn in our economy.
  • An expansion of programming at WLTV Channel 14 as a result of the tremendous growth in the number of broadcasting students.
  • The establishment of a School of Professional Studies and the hiring of a Dean.
  • The hiring of new Deans for the Colleges of Business and Education.
  • The establishment and induction of the first classes into the Order of the Torch, ranking men’s honorary, and the Liber Society, ranking women’s honorary.
  • The historic success of our athletic programs including the hosting of two NCAA Division II football playoff games which appeared in millions of homes on Fox Sports. The 1,394 yards of combined offense in WLU’s monumental 84-63 win over Edinboro established an NCAA Division II record and earned mention in Sports Illustrated. WLU also claimed 4 first team All-Americans, the runner-up for the Harlon Hill Trophy (outstanding player in DII), the winner of the Gene Upshaw trophy (outstanding lineman in DII), a WVIAC conference title and a number 9 ranking in the final national polls. Our wrestling program also earned a Top 25 ranking and claimed an All-American. Our men’s basketball program led the nation in scoring for the 3rd year in a row and hosted a game on CBS national television. Our women’s basketball team claimed the Player of the Year in the WVIAC as well as an All-American.
  • The completion of our new women’s softball complex which will host its first game in 2010.
  • The establishment of the University Economics Club which hosted national speakers including a the former Speaker of the House.
These and other accomplishments could not have taken place without the commitment and dedication of those members of the University community who truly believe that we are well on our way to moving from a good college to a Great University. Thank you for you tireless efforts and a best wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year.

Governor Orders Budget Cut

Posted By rcapehart on December 29, 2009

Governor Joe Manchin has issued an Executive Order requiring agencies to reduce the amount of General Revenue Funds it receives by 3.4%. In ordering the reduction, the Governor cited the anticipated $120 million shortfall  that is expected by the end of the current fiscal year on June 30, 2010.

The University is currently evaluating the impact of this Order. It is not expected to affect the salaries and benefits of personnel employed by the University. The University must submit its proposed changes to its expenditure schedule by January 20, 2010.

Merry Christmas to All!

Posted By rcapehart on December 25, 2009

Each year, our church conducts its “Donut Drop” on Christmas Eve. The purpose of the project is to wish a Merry Christmas to those who have to work on Christmas. Tonight, Emily and I dropped off donuts and wished a Merry Christmas to  Lieutenant Tom Hostutler who took over the night shift at West Liberty University at 11:00 p.m. this evening.

We’ll use this opportunity to also wish a Merry Christmas to all of the West Liberty University community and all of our friends and family. May you enjoy a wonderful holiday season!

The Value of a College Diploma

Posted By rcapehart on December 20, 2009

Last week, 138 students received their college degrees from West Liberty University. Over the next few months, high school seniors will be making their college choices. What is the value of the college diploma they will receive?

HumanCapitalScore.com provides an online calculator to help students evaluate the value of their career choices. The calculator generates a 10-year range of the post-graduation income of students based upon their test scores, high school and college attended, grades and major.

Obviously, there are other factors that contribute to the value of a college diploma. The total college experience; preparation for a rich, well-rounded life; finding work that you enjoy; and gaining an influential network of friends and associates are attributes that enhance the value of going to college and earning a degree.

However, the income potential of a college degree still rates high on a student’s list. Click here to check it out.

Reflections on a Great Season!

Posted By rcapehart on November 29, 2009

A great season ended Saturday for all of the fans of Coach Roger Waialae’s 2009 Hilltopper football team. It was a season of record-breaking performances and wonderful memories. The dramatic win over Charleston still ranks as the best football game I’ve ever witnessed. The victory over the Golden Eagles in Charleston concluded a three game sweep of wins over the three toughest teams in the WVIAC - Glenville, Shepherd and Charleston - and all of those wins over the road. The Hilltoppers were undefeated in the conference and captured the title outright for the first time since 1971. The win over Edinboro, 84-63, not only brought revenge for our opening season loss - but was a game that brought West Liberty national attention and produced a performance and an outcome that we will never forget.

Naturally, the loss to California (Pa.) was disappointing. They have a great program and a great team. They were the best team in one of the best Division II conferences in America. We are building a great program by producing great teams with great young men. We moved to a new level this year. We not only won our conference but proved in our victory over Edinboro that our program has moved to a point where we can not only compete, but beat good teams from a great conference.

In the game with Cal, we’ve also seen the next level - a level to which we shall continue to aspire. This was Cal’s third straight regional championship and will be Cal’s third trip to the national semi-finals. We wish them luck. We have a solid foundation of outstanding coaches and outstanding student-athletes to get us to that level in the near future.

Beyond the games and the scores and the thrilling wins and the stinging losses, this football season produced something else - a soaring spirit and a sense of pride that is vital to the building of a great university. The excitement of this season spilled over into the community whose support and acknowledgement was evidenced in the large crowds that attended our games. Alumni began to reconnect with the University and faculty and staff and students shared in an enhanced camaraderie whose importance cannot be underestimated.

This season Coach Waialae’s coaches and players made tremendous progress on their growth from a good team to a great program - just as we continue to move from a good college to a great university.

Coach Waialae - to you, your coaches, your players and your staff - thank you for a great season - and thank you for making us proud!

Thanksgiving Break at WLU.

Posted By rcapehart on November 24, 2009

My office has been receiving a number of inquiries from students regarding Thanksgiving Break at West Liberty University. In response, our schedule for Thanksgiving Week has been unchanged for a number of years. As per the regulations of the Higher Education Policy Commission, as a state institution in West Virginia, we are required to conduct a predetermined number of “academic days.” Due to this requirement, we have two options regarding the week of Thanksgiving: (1) conduct classes during the the beginning of the week of Thanksgiving or (2) begin classes earlier in the summer or extend classes and exams further into December. In contrast to our policy, WVU has decided to take the week of Thanksgiving off and extend their semester beyond ours. In the past, WVU has conducted classes on Monday and Tuesday of the week of Thanksgiving and let out earlier. Nevertheless, a number of years ago, we decided that our policy would be to conduct classes during this week and, as a result, our Christmas break would start earlier than other public institutions who are not conducting classes during this week. There are a number of other state institutions that are following a similar policy. Moreover, by meeting the one-half day on Wednesday, we are able to count that day as an “academic day” and it provides our students the opportunity to get an earlier start in leaving campus.

Over the years, there has been a general consensus to this approach. However, we continue to be open to any further comment or discussion.

Thoughts on a Great and Historic Weekend.

Posted By rcapehart on November 23, 2009

It was just an incredible weekend! By now, we’ve all seen or heard of the eye-popping performance of the West Liberty University football team in winning their second round game of the NCAA Division II playoffs by an astounding score of 84-63. The coaches and staff deserve all of the credit for such an outstanding game and the right to move on to play California of Pennsylvania in the Regional Finals next Saturday at noon at Russek Field.

If you’ve been on campus this weekend, you may have also witnessed the success of our basketball teams. On Friday night, Coach Jim Crutchfield’s men’s basketball team established an new school record in beating the University of Pittsburgh-Titusville, 145-70. On Saturday night, a great crowd was again on hand to watch the men’s team defeat arch-rival Wheeling Jesuit University 90-69. On Sunday, another good crowd was on hand at the ASRC to watch the women come from behind to beat a highly-touted Indiana University of Pennsylvania team who are the defending PSAC champions.

Whew! If you enjoy sports, this was quite a weekend. But, the past few days has been more than just sporting events. It was an exhibition of our ability to host a series of high quality events and create a community celebration in a manner befitting our outstanding University.

First and foremost, let me begin by acknowledging and thanking Athletic Director Jim Watson and his staff for their presentation, their attention to detail and the hospitality they displayed to our visiting teams and coaches. Everything they did was first class. We are fortunate to have the experience and vision of Coach Watson who - I believe - thoroughly enjoys the challenges of putting on such events and can do it better than anyone in the country. I spent some time with Dr. Frank Condino,  the athletic director from IUP who served as the NCAA representative for the game, who offered high praise for this weekend’s events and the exciting college atmosphere that was created. Likewise, Edinboro Athletic Director Bruce Baumgartner (a former Olympic gold medalist and one of the greatest freestyle wrestlers ever) was highly complimentary of our hospitality. Again, congratulations to Jim Watson and his staff!

Also, congratulations to Theresa Gretchen and the crew at Channel 14 for their tireless efforts to provide television and audio coverage of all of our sporting events while not missing a beat in producing their regular shows on Friday. They started early and stayed late - well after all of us had retired for the evening - in order to take advantage of the opportunity to promote West Liberty University. Theresa stayed on campus this weekend and was up until 3:00 a.m. on Sunday morning editing highlights that were forwarded and appeared on ESPN. She and others took considerable time away from their families to utilize the terrific facilities we possess at the Media Arts Center to promote our University. For their commitment and dedication, Theresa and her crew deserve the gratitude of the entire University family and our community.

Along the same line, our heartfelt thanks to Reid Amos, our Executive Director of the Office of Communications and “the Voice of the Hilltoppers,” a voice that was most assuredly tired after calling all four contests. Yet, if you heard his call of the women’s basketball game yesterday, it was just as fresh, insightful and enthusiastic as ever. We are fortunate to have one of the best announcers in college sports that you will find anywhere in America.

Congratulations also to Jay Ware and the Hilltopper Marching Band and the pep band who performed everywhere this weekend - including the Festival of Lights parade in Wheeling. The revival of the band has greatly enhanced the spirit and atmosphere of the games and the campus, in general. We continue to hear extremely positive comments regarding the band’s appearances and their performance. Jay and its members may look forward to an outstanding future.

There are so many others that you miss when you start down this road - but on behalf of the faculty, staff, alumni and fans - thanks again to everyone for an outstanding effort.

As we think back on this weekend, we’ll certainly remember the score. The 5,000 fans that attended the game and all of the events of this weekend left having witnessed a part of West Liberty University history. But, another important memory we hope will be the sense of excitement and community of which we were a part. Many of the fans at Saturday’s game did not graduate from West Liberty University. In fact, many were not associated in any manner - other than they were active members of our community and that our University has been, is and shall continue to be an important part of this community. They cheered every touchdown and mourned every lost fumble every bit as deeply as our alumni, benefactors, faculty and staff - and now they are a part of the West Liberty University family.

Sure, it was just a game - but its impact goes far beyond the sixty minutes of play. It has helped strengthen the bond between the community - and a great University.

Game Day a Part of an Exciting Week!

Posted By rcapehart on November 21, 2009

Game Day has come as Coach Roger Waialae’s West Liberty University Hilltoppers will take the field against Edinboro University in its first NCAA Division II Playoff appearance this afternoon at Russek Field. The game is truly the highlight of a fun and exciting week on the Hilltop. There’s been a buzz in the whole community about this game. People are talking about the Hilltoppers all up and down the Ohio Valley. And today at noon, we kick it off.

The playoff game is certainly the cornerstone of a fun and exciting week. Thursday I had the opportunity to walk around campus. There was activity everywhere. In the Student Union, WLU’s own in-house comedy troupe, “West AdLib,” was the warm-up group to for a comedian direct from Comedy Central. Jazzman’s was full and our outstanding music department was conducting a concert in College Hall. International Week was in full swing with our International Club hosting a movie in the Alumni Room. At the MAC, Theresa Gretchen and the Channel 14 crew were conducting community auditions for a new show while preparing for their broadcasts this weekend.

Last night was one of the busiest Friday nights I’ve ever seen. While both Edinboro and West Liberty held practices in preparation for today’s game, students were decorating the campus with signs; the Hilltopper Classic was underway with Jim Crutchfield’s squad crushing the University of Pittsburgh-Titusville, 145-70; there was a meeting with the NCAA officials in the Boyle Room; other last minute game day preparations were being made; and students and faculty and staff and even a few alumni were seen walking around as the buzz continued to build.

In a few hours, the fans will start to arrive, the players will take the field and the playoff game will kick off. But, there will also be a steel drum concert in the ASRC later this afternoon. The Hilltopper Classic returns this evening and Coach Lynn Ullom’s team will play tomorrow afternoon.

It’s just an enjoyable time to be a part of the university family! It’s going to be a beautiful day and we would invite the whole community to come and join us!
